First, Billb you are a god. You too Jayzero. Thanks for your helpful instructions. This forum has been my life for five days now. I never knew Linux would be so addicting. I'm still super noob. Anyway, I just can't figure out how to install, or use xe's cdr program to let me rip sega cd to an xe compatible format. I've tried the "add software the hard way guide" and CronoCloud's guide for compiling, but I must be doing something wrong. I have the proper dev tools installed (I'm pretty sure). Following cronoclouds guide I extracted xe-ppc-64-bin.2.16.1.tar.bz2 (using older ver because I heard its faster and sixaxis compatible) to /usr/src. Using ls i can see cdr is in the directory as well as xe-ppc-64-bin.2.16.1.tar.bz2. Next step I believe is ./configure but it tells me ./configure is not a directory. Obviously making basic noob mistake. Your help is appreciated.

Don't have time to look at it at the moment, but try changing to that directory and see if there are any instructions for compiling it there, or in the main directory. If I recall correctly I don't think XE uses a configure script.

billb, your posts have helped me a lot. Thanks a million!

This is my first post and I just wanted to give some info about using the Dualshock 3 / sixaxis controller in XE. I was trying to program the buttons and such in the GUI without much luck, but it did let me see the button numbers that I wanted to use for each. I went into ~/.xe/rc and deleted all of the files except xerc (it'll recreate them when you start each machine type). Then I just manually edited the xerc file, replacing the button and direction values for "Joy 1" with the ones I wanted to use. It seems to work great for me. I just finished using billb's guide to get my sixaxis working as a mouse under YDL 6.1, so I can load the ROMS and such with the controller's analog stick, and I have the D-pad for use once I'm playing a game. I first tried it in xe 2.16 then downgraded back to 2.14 because SNES performance wasn't great for me (Didn't help my performance, but it proved that this works in both).

Someone may have said this already, but I sure couldn't find it. Here's an example of my ~/.xe/rc/xerc joystick config:

# Joystick bindings

Joy 1 up 4
Joy 1 down 6
Joy 1 left 7
Joy 1 right 5
Joy 1 start 3
Joy 1 select 0
Joy 1 button1 15
Joy 1 button2 12
Joy 1 button3 14
Joy 1 button4 13

I hope this helps someone.

I had a problem with Xe Emulator. It running really slow on my machine. Is there something wrong? The game is frame by frame. Unplayable. SNES and Genesis games all not playable. Is there a way to make it run smoothly?

I installed XE 2.14 from a tutorial off another site, it went on fine and would run Sonic 2 at full speed, and Legend of Zelda at full speed, but with no sound. Also every time I opened it, it would give me three errors and three more when I started the rom. So I thought if I got rid of that version and installed one of Billbs rpms off the forum maybe I would get sound since everyone else says how great XE is (I'm also jealous as hell from everyone saying how awesome snes9xgtk is when mine freezes every time I launch it) but no, I tried to open it in the application installer and a window pops up saying this -

/tmp/xe-2.14.0-1.ydl6.bdg.ppc64.rpm could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

... Don't really know what to do with that lol, could someone please help? I'd like to get sound going on XE... Thank you

I wanted to revive this topic due to help required. I installed the XE Emulator 2.14 through yum. The game itself feeds off great video, but the sound is choppy, real dim. I'm also having issue calibrating the PS3 controller. The characters movements are reversed. I think the bigger issue is the sound how can I fix these?

Make sure you're using the Linux ppc-32 (xe-ppc-32-bin.2.16.2.tar.bz2) version -- not the 64.

Hi, I have a question that hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I installed 2.1.6.1 a while back on the ps3 using yellow dog 6.2, but it ran really slow with no sound and the controllers didnt work; so I uninstalled it. Now, i tired 2.1.4, then 2.1.6 again, and uninstalled those. I again tried to install 2.1.4, but it keeps telling me that 2.1.6 is already installed, when I have tried repeatedly to uninstall it, but it won't. Also, when 2.1.4 was running, I couldn't get any video or anything when i loaded a rom, just 60/60 frame rate. I really want to be able to play the sega genesis games. Any ideas?

Yes, there's a problem with that RPM -- a post uninstall script fails and it doesn't uninstall properly. Use this to get rid of it:

1. Determine the name of the package:

rpm -q xe

2. Use the rpm command with the --noscripts option to erase it (you need to be root):

rpm -e --noscripts xe-2.14.0-3.ydl6.bdg
(replace xe-2.14.0-3.ydl6.bdg with the actual name from step 1)

I've fixed this issue on the latest release I've packaged (2.16.2) and will be adding that version to the ps3bodega repo for YDL 6.2 this evening. I've tested playback of a few Genesis games and it works fine.

Thanks, that fixed that. I installed the newest version via ps3bodega, but I still can't play any roms. I load the rom (.bin files for sega games), but the screen just turns black and the fps is 60/60. Initially, when I first installed xe, it complained that it was unable to load rc, but it went away after I restarted xe. What am I doing wrong?

Not sure ... it's working fine here for me. The only .bin file I checked was Faery Tale Adventure -- loads OK though. Try some different roms? Most of the ones I have end with .smd (and are in a .zip file).
