Any known issues with YDL 6.2 on PS3 model 98038?

Postby rubecscubed » 08 Feb 2010, 09:18

[MODERATOR EDIT: It's best not to piggyback new questions on existing topics. I've split this post off for you. :D -Paul]

I finally found what I've been lookin for! Been postin inane questions all over the community except here  Paul answered some of my inquiries elsewhere and set me on a new path. So now I begin my quest to turn my ps3 into something more! I'm downloading 6.2 ydl as I type ( usin my ps3 with my new mediaboard to post this ) on my pc, downloaded the sha1sum file, bookmarked the yum and rpm pages and dusted off my old reliable usb keyboard. How am I doin so far? I'm a noob at all of this and I might become somewhat of a pest with a million and one questions  in my wanderings thru the community, I've noticed that 160gb model 98038 is rarely if not mentioned at all. Does anyone know of any issues with this particular ps3 or is it safe to assume that a ps3 is a ps3 is a ps3? Well enough ramblings for now, thanks again Paul for your insight and I shall return with many a question when I settle down after a nervous breakdown when I install that disc!

Of the PS3s that can run Linux, there's basically three motherboards.

1. The original launch motherboard with PS2 backwards compatibility in hardware and 4 USB ports*
2. The second generation motherboard with PS2 backwards compatibility in software/hardware and 4 USB ports
3. The third generation motherboard with no PS2 backwards compatibility and 2 USB ports

Within each major motherboard revision, there are minor revisions. See here for the full rundown:
http://playstation.custhelp.com/app/ans ... l/a_id/232

So - from what I can tell, the model you listed is a third generation motherboard.

Mostly, any of these machines can run Linux just fine. However, there was an issue with a couple of the third generation machines and using the ps3vram as a swapfile with YDL 6.1. According to the advisory - http://ydl.net/support/advisories.shtml - the models affected were the 80 gig 98015 and the 160 gig 900006. I'm not sure if the 98038 had this issue with 6.1 or not. If you install YDL 6.1 and it doesn't boot, the advisory has steps to fix the issue.

YDL 6.2 does not experience this issue and works on all OtherOS supported machines. (i.e. Not the slim :D)

Cheers,
Paul

* Although the 20 gig and 60 gig Japan/North American models might seem different, they had the same motherboard. The extra features of the 60 gig - the WiFi, memory card reader slots, etc. were on a daughterboard.

No worries! We do have two main rules on this forum: No thread piggy-backing and no double posting.

Other than that, as long as you are respectful of your fellow board members, and keep the language relatively curse free, we're happy to answer your questions, listen to your rants, discuss the finer points of Cell architecture, etc.

Cheers,
Paul

Ok, I'm somewhat ignorant when it comes to forums as this actually my first :P I have read about ps3s "bricking" or not playin movies (BD) and other strange happenins when people would upate their consoles. I never had any issues with mine knock on wood, but there's alot of wierd stuff out there about consoles gettin fried an such. Ok I have had enough excitment for my first YDL expierence. Go check my other posting an see what I did. Me thinks everyone is goin to have a good chuckle at my expense  Nite all!

Luckily - that has no bearing on Linux. That is a Sony mandated GameOS update. Linux runs under the OtherOS.

Quick summary: Phat PS3s have two modes - GameOS and OtherOS. GameOS is the normal PS3 experience - XMB, video games, blu-ray, etc. Periodically, Sony has firmware updates for the GameOS and some folks report bricking of their systems after performing these updates.

Personally, I've never had any problems with these updates. I did have this issue though:
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playsta ... 477#M61477

When you load Linux, that runs under the OtherOS. The OtherOS is isolated from the GameOS via a Hypervisor layer. What this means is that you can't directly access any of the GameOS from Linux.

The GameOS firmware updates do affect OtherOS slightly - sometimes there are changes in the system hypervisor that require YDL patches - but Linux can't cause the issues you're mentioning. That's all on Sony's end. :D

Cheers,
Paul
