Folding@Home with the PS3

Postby kamika » 22 Mar 2007, 16:16

With the new firmware (1.6) and the start of PS3 in Europe tomorrow (23.03.2007) we're trying to get a yellowdog-board group for Folding@Home started.

If you have never heard of Folding@Home before check it out here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/

In short words: You're donating computer power to help research on protein folding.

The software you need comes with the new firmware. You can find it in CrossMediaBar.

Due to the hardware on the PS3 it has some nice realtime features, give it a try.

Of course all other systems and architectures are also welcome to join the group.

Our group number is: 55180
Team stats: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main ... mnum=55180

Hey man, I commend your effort, but I noticed that you haven't had anyone else log onto your team. I would, but I already belong to the PS3Forums.com team. You might want to consider joining up with us over there, we've got a great group going and have jumped to about #400 on the teams list and at the rate we are folding at, we should hit the top 100 within the next month or so. If you want to join us, the number is 54376.

Check us out at www.ps3forums.com

I joined. I'll stay as long as the team's active. I wish they would have let my 24 WUs carry over to the team, but whatever.

PS3 OS, definitely. The PS3 OS gives you the full power of the console, whereas yellowdog only lets you use what Sony's opened up for YDL.

I just joined the Folding@Home Project today. i will be using my ps3 as much as possible to help contribute to this great project. I also found a non graphical version that i am currently running on my PC in the background and will keep the PC Folding@Home on 24/7. Both accounts i have joined to the YDL team. Lets get some more YDL forum members to join up. This is important. Please download this small application and set your team number to 55180.

Hello,

I see that this is a great project. But for now I don't know why I must go on with the Folding@Home projects.

Sorry if this words hurts you but because of my misunderstanding:

1. I not pay ¤¤¤/$$$ for a console to do a work that his refunds goes to IBM/Sony/Xerox/XXXXXX.... Maybe them must had thinked on sell the console at lower cost for that.

2. This refunds may be donate to people that really needs it (not to people that has diseases or to medical centers... they had enough and do enough for the health care of the people). Not all people is rich.

3. Other principles of cancerigenous forms or diseases are provoked by our environment. As for example, electricity (what seems that PS3 is using with a lot of more machines, networks, routers, etc, etc, etc.....)
Then, It is not better to stop all the electricity machines to people stay good? I am using a PS3 and accepting the risk of use it.

Then, please, why I must join to Folding@Home?
Regards...

You certainly don't have to join or contribute to the project in any way.

I didn't understand half of what you said. I realize that maybe English isn't your native language, so that's okay.

I do not believe the electricity that powers a PS3 is going to be giving anyone cancer, let alone the power that runs any other household device. High tension power lines are believed by some people to cause cancer... those aren't in anyone's houses... they're outside. Also, accepting risk does not mean that we shouldn't try to minimize or stop possible negattive side effects.

Hey, so they recently had that update to "Life with Playstation". Its a cool Idea and all, but it dramatically reduces Ns/day performance of Folding, which is not cool. What else is not cool is that my WU count got reset, putting me back to nil. I'm kind of pissed about that, but I'm not sure if it was the udate to "Life", or if it was from when I formatted my HD for YDL. Did anyone else have this happen to them???

I'll have to double-check, but I believe my WU count was retained when I updated to "Life with Playstation." When you formatted for YDL did you do a full system backup/restore from the Game OS?

Well, I know I'm one of the guilty ones! I'm either running YDL or playing Playstation games most of the time.
