Lost E17 "StartBar"

Postby EvilMunky » 24 Feb 2008, 15:36

Hi guys,

I hope you folks can help me as well as you did with my first question. Anyway last night I was messing around with the "StartBar" (can't remember official name) trying to get it so windows would maximize to cover it up. Well it seems that I've hidden it below the desktop and can't figure out how to get it back on top. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I can log into GNOME just fine, so if need-be I can just use that. Also, speaking of GNOME, whenever I log in under this environment I get an error:

"No '/dev/pmu' device found."

It doesn't seem to have a negative effect on anything, just wondering if this is a common error on the PS3.

EDIT: Actually on second thought, I think I'm going to stick with GNOME anyway. It definately seems to work better (less buggy). For example VLC breaks under E17 when I switch to full screen video. So, don't worry bout the E17 question, but any help on the error in GNOME would be appreciated.

For "No '/dev/pmu' device found." (it is listed in the READ ME of this forum )

To reveal your shelf in e17, use Ctrl-Alt-Right Arrow to change to desktop 1,0, then change the setting again so it's on top of everything. If you deleted the shelf entirely, see here.

This occurs because the "desktop" in e17 is actually a feature of the Nautilus file manager which behaves sort of like a full screen window with no borders. You can turn off the Nautilus "desktop" in e17 like this:

Code: Select all
gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop false

and back on again:

Code: Select all
gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop true

(it takes a little while for it to come back up)

The downside to turning it off is you can't have any icons on your Desktop. To get to your desktop files with it turned off you have to run the file browser (Nautilus). And to empty anything in the "trash" you have to use the "show hidden files" option in Nautilus while in your home folder and manually delete the files from the .trash folder. I still prefer running e17 without the "desktop" though. :)

I have had similar difficulties with E17.

First off, to EvilMunky, I too found that VLC in full screen will "break" E17 (the window & screen redraw stops functioning) but I found that using E17 - Enlightenment - Restart (from the start bar) will fix that quickly enough.

I have had a problem with my E17 "start bar" disappearing. I had changed the shelf configuration to the 3rd down on the basic menu (left justify on bottom / invisible) and had previously set it to auto hide and it vanished completely. I found it with the ctrl-alt-r.arrow trick but now it would only appear on desktops 1-3 and not 0. After mucking about I have again managed to make it reappear on desktop 0 (choose basic shelf config 2nd from top) and it is working again.

Mmm... bugs for lunch again. Cheers. :P
